ALBUM INFORMATION
"Straight Up" is a 1989 hit single for Paula Abdul, which reached #1 in the Billboard Hot 100 and brought her widespread public attention.
It was written and produced by Elliot Wolff.
It was the third single released from her debut album Forever Your Girl, after "Knocked Out" and "(It's Just) the Way You Love Me". While the latter was enjoying success on the R&B charts, radio station KMEL in San Francisco started playing "Straight Up" from the album. The label decided to abandon "(It's Just) the Way You Love Me" and refocus its attention on Straight Up. This strategy paid off, because Straight Up was follow by three more #1 hits from the same album.
The video, directed by David Fincher and choreographed by Paula herself, won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video.
The record spent 3 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 from February 11, 1989. It also reached #3 in the UK.
The accidental release of Elliot Wolff’s song “Straight Up” took the music world by storming straight up the charts to # 1. In fact, the song had reached Top 20 on Billboard Charts before filming began on the music video.
“Straight Up” was # 1 on Billboard Charts for three weeks and was a Top 40 hit for 14 weeks in 1989.
Elliot Wolff was the recipient of the 1989 ASCAP Song of the Year award for the hit song “Straight Up” recorded by Paula Abdul.
”Straight Up” was Paula Abdul’s third single from her “Forever Your Girl” album.
